We are in the middle of a series about worship, learning that there is much more to the concept of worship than joining in on Sunday mornings to sing a few songs. Our lifestyle of worship is defined more by what we do with the entirety of our life rather than a moment in our week. Everything we do is an extension of our worship of God.
I love this paraphrase of Romans 12:1-2 from the message version….
Romans 12:1-2 MSG
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.
Did you read that? Wow.
I had to stop and ask myself if I was failing in this area of my life – if God were to give me a grade right now, what would it be? There’s no question that I must evaluate every area of my life and heart…
First, does God really have the entirety of my heart? To be honest, I don’t think so – when I stop and take a true assessment of my life, I have to admit that there are many areas that I rely on my own strength rather than trusting God and offering my life as an offering – every area of my life.
These are the areas that I am allowing God to evaluate and search me in –
As a wife, is the way that I love my husband honoring and worshipful to God?
As a mother, am I raising my children in honor of God and as an act of worship toward Him?
As a worker, am I conducting myself at work in honor of God and as an act of worship?
As a friend and leader, am I loving my friends and those I lead as an act of worship?
Here’s the tough one… are my eating habits, lifestyle choices, shows I watch, music I listen to – are those an act of worship toward God?
Walking with God in true worship requires that I humble myself, acknowledge God first and foremost in every area of my life.
Here is my prayer as I set my life before God as an act of worship:
Psalm 51:10-13 NKJ
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.
As you contemplate worship in your own life… here’s a great song!
