A Tribute to 1987: My Sophomore Year

Ok, so, now that I’ve gotten started; I just love creating these playlists. Here’s one from 1987, the beginning of my Sophomore Year in high school.

And, once again, I can’t do a tribute to the year without a picture of me from that year. Here’s my 1987 school picture…. hold the laughter….

Enjoy the music from a great year…

Tribute to 1986: My Freshman Year

Well, I now have a teenage daughter getting ready to go into High School. So, I got to thinking back on my own freshman year and decided to revisit some of the music that was popular that year. I totally forgot how much I love some of these songs.

I can’t very well have a tribute to my freshman year without a picture from that year. Drumroll, please… (yes, I’m the one who keeps the “proof” prints … haha)

Kelsey, sweetheart, I hope you have as much great music to look back on your freshman year as I do.

Enjoy my 1986 play list.

Summertime Fun

I love summer. Sun. Water. Parks. Beaches. Fun. It’s always full of great memories and opportunities to have fun with friends and family. The past few weeks have been extrememly busy and fun for us. Here’s just a snapshot of what’s been keeping us so busy lately.

We spent a weekend with our friends, Joel & Ellie and their adorable son, Grady, when they came to visit from Raleigh. We enjoyed the Aquarium, a Braves Game, some Varsity food, some Wii boxing and lots of great time together laughing and enjoying each others company.

We spent a day at Six Flags and enjoyed an evening Drake Bell concert (that’s Drake from Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh for those older folks out there). The girls had a blast, especially Heather who somehow made it right up front on the rail through the entire concert. She was ecstatic, to say the least. It was fun, and, yes, he is cute.

We had a backyard camp out. We set the tent up for the girls so they could spend the night outside under the stars. Steve made a camp fire and we roasted hot dogs and made s’mores. It was so much fun, right in our own backyard. The girls had fun hanging in the tent…. but (as we expected) didn’t make it all night. I awoke the next morning to find them all in the house. :o ) they must have heard the wild suburban atlanta animals or big foot or a monster or….

We spent several days hanging out at Six Flags White Water park with our good friends, Karl & Sayu and their adorable daughter, Noelle. It was tons of fun and we still have the sunburns to prove it! :o )

On the 4th of July we enjoyed a great afternoon of food and fellowship with our friends Karl & Sayu at their home. After that, we went to a Braves vs. Astros game (the Braves won – yea!!) and enjoyed the post-game fireworks show.

All in all, we’re having a great summer.

Treasuring each moment,

A Great Heritage

I love the word heritage. I love the richness of it’s meaning, the virtue of it in our lives and the hope it holds for the future. I think it’s a great word, but until I got married, I never really understood it. My husband, Steve is a wonderful man and comes from a wonderful family that is rich in its Christian heritage. From stories of a great-great-great grandmother who prayed daily that her children and their children for generations would continue to serve the Lord, to beautiful traditions and great love, Steve’s family on both his mother and father’s sides benefit from a heritage that runs deep.

Yesterday, I once again had the privilege of participating in that rich family heritage when we traveled to Birmingham to Steve’s Aunt Joyce’s home to meet up with his mom and dad and all of his mom’s sisters (from Texas and Kentucky). We had a great time of fellowship (and food!) and it was great to see my daughters interact with their distant Aunts, Uncles & Cousins, meeting some of them for the very first time.

One of the definitions of the word heritage is, “practices that are handed down from the past by traditions.” And, one of the Parish/Skaggs (Steve’s mom’s maiden name) traditions is what’s known as “Gospel Singin’ ” (pronounced correctly as Gospel Sangin’ -don’t forget the twang on “sang”) this practice occurs commonly at family gatherings…. the instruments get pulled out .. pianos or guitars or maybe even a banjo every now and then, and old traditional hymns are sang for sometimes hours as family members weave in and out of the singing, back and forth between conversation, laughter and food. It’s a relaxed, happy time, full of joy and jest. It’s a part of the heritage of our family that draws a common thread of unity among us whenever we gather from distances far and wide to fellowship. It is something that we all love and it rings of what it just might be like one day, as we gather in heaven, singing praises to our God side-by-side with all of our brothers and sisters.

Another definition of the word heritage is, “any attribute or immaterial possession that is inherited from ancestors.” I love that definition. Love is another great heritage that is passed down from this family – love both for one another and for Our Father in heaven. It is a completely intangible and immaterial possession that is of a greater value than anything that could ever be given.

It is this type of heritage that I love and want to see continue in my daughter’s lives and the lives of their children, for generations to come.

Spring Break Landscaping

So, most of you know that for a lot of our Spring Break “vacation” we took on a major landscaping project. We had 1/2 a truckload of mulch dumped in our driveway on Saturday and bought a ton of herbs, plants and flowers to be planted.

Well, I’m happy to say that by Tuesday evening it was all pretty much done! YAY! We have lots of scratches, sunburned noses (Steve’s head is sunburned, too…. he really should wear a hat), sore muscles and a much better looking landscape to show for it.

I’ve posted some pics below to share our success – couple of things first:

  • Our grass is ugly because it hasn’t really started growing back in yet
  • Most importantly, our house is NOT teal …. don’t know what happened with my camera – but our house is actually a nice shade of blue.
Enjoy the pics!
